What is Reiki? (the common explanation)

Reiki (pronounced RayKey) is a combination of two Japanese words Rei and Ki, meaning universal life energy[1]. Reiki is an ancient healing technique that supposedly involves using the life force energy to heal, balancing the subtle energies within our bodies. It addresses several imbalances - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Reiki's ki-energies flow through the practitioner's hands while they are touching or hovering above the recipient's body. In essence, the Reiki practitioner serves as a vehicle that supplies healing energies where they are most needed by the recipient. This healing art is an effective delivery system[2]. Reiki does not involve physical manipulation or the ingestion or application of any substances, but supposedly works with the subtle vibrational field thought to surround the body.

Although Reiki is ancient in origin, modern day Reiki was formulated in the early 1920's, by Dr. Mikao Usui. Dr. Usui was a Christian monk, studying with Zen Buddhists[3]. Familiar with oriental and western methods of healing, he synthesized these together. During his attempts to find a better healing method, Dr. Usui secluded on Mt. Kurama, outside of Kyoto, to meditate, fast, and pray. During his stay on the mountain he gained deep understanding of how some of the vital life force energy already flowing within him could be channeled and used for healing. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.

Reiki is not attached to any belief system, so anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment, regardless of religion or faith. The only prerequisite is the desire to heal or be healed.

Our Problem with Reiki (or: Scientific Studies)

What we gave above is the widespread explanation of this form of healing. This is more-or-less what most good Reiki sites will tell you. However - WE have a huge problem accepting this explanation!

We are a scientifically inclined website. Our founders' background is in finance and in "hard" science and engineering. As such, we really have a problem with "spiritual" terms such as "universal life energy", "vibrational field surrounding the body", "channeling energies" and the whole concept of hand healing without touch. What we need so that we can accept Reiki are two things: scientific research, and hands-on experience with it.

Searching for scientific studies, we've found that Reiki has been proven effective in reducing pain and improving Quality of Life in advanced cancer patients[4,5], changing blood hemoglobin and hematocrit levels[6], reducing levels of free radicals[7], reducing anxiety and lowering blood pressure[8], etc. etc. - the list goes on. Reiki even proved effective in improved growth of heat-shocked bacterial cultures[9]. There's a vast body of recent research, mostly pointing to the effectiveness of the method.

Adding to that, our hands-on experience with several courses also proved that if you use a good course, Reiki is valid.

So - how does Reiki work? Is it by "channeling universal life energy" as the believers say, or by relaxation and placebo effect as some say[10]? In all truth - we don't know. All we know is that it DOES work.

The Reiki Cash Machine

So - Reiki in itself is NOT a scam. However, many Reiki courses ARE! Reiki has really become a real cash machine: Most Reiki masters teach in three distinct stages, and each stage requires hefty premiums:

  • Level 1 - Reiki Practitioner: $100-$150
  • Level 2 - Advanced Reiki Practitioner: $150-$500
  • Level 3 - Reiki Master: $350-$10,000
  • These are the prices for Reiki courses. Reiki Healing costs $25-$70 an hour from Reiki practitioners, $50-$120 from Reiki Masters.

Clearly, becoming a Reiki master can be very profitable! But as the courses are usually pretty short - we have to ask: why is tuition so high? The only explanation we have is that Reiki has become a cash machine, and existing masters usually want to keep competition low, unless they profit from teaching!

However, it's possible to become a Reiki Master at a fraction of the cost of "regular" Reiki lessons! Our team has performed hands-on tests of several leading home-study Reiki courses, and found out that although some courses are worthless, others are truly magical, and won't cost you an arm and a leg. The following web pages provide in-depth reviews of the three top-rated Reiki Master Courses. The reviews are followed by our Conclusions where we compare these products to each other

Although we tested several other courses, some did not make the cut. To avoid data overkill (and legal issues from sore losers), the also-rans and scams are not listed here.
