Secure Order,
Limited Partial-Money-Back
Guarantee.

orders are processed by a third party dedicated processor,
over a secure and encrypted connection, so for
both courses order and credit-card details are very safe and
secure.
Perfect Pitch
SuperCourse
offers a
40-day, No questions asked money
back guarantee,
with one limitation: The
Guarantee only holds providing you open up to
the first 5 CDs of the course
(these are the
orange colored CDs). If
so, and you are not 100% satisfied with
the product, return the course via mail and
once it arrives you'll receive a 100%
refund - No questions asked.
Our only caveat is that obtaining Perfect Pitch
using this program takes 6-12
months, and 40 days may prove too short
for truly assessing the product.
While Perfect
Pitch's return policy earns a thumbs up, we have a real
problem with Relative Pitch's return policy:
Relative Pitch SuperCourse offers a 90-day,
No questions asked money back guarantee,
with a severe limitation: The Guarantee holds only for unopened CDs
(except for CD#1 which is free). Once you open a CD, you cannot
return it. If you are not 100% satisfied with the
product, return the unopened CDs via
mail (shipping charges are on you)
and once they arrive you'll be refunded
for these CDs only - No questions asked.
We find this extremely limiting, as you can't use
the return period to skim and sample CDs to see
how the course develops - as every CD you open can be money lost.
Although we fully understand Burge's unwillingness to refund for 41
opened CDs that he cannot resend to other customers, the limitation
is harsh. Sorry, Burge, but we give it one thumb down.
Had we performed this test 1
year ago, both Perfect Pitch and Relative Pitch
would have easily won first place in their respective categories.
They were, simply put, the best courses around – no contest
whatsoever.
Perfect Pitch
SuperCourse
Teaching perfect pitch is very
difficult, and as such, few courses manage to do so effectively.
Until recently, Perfect Pitch
SuperCourse
was the only course we could full-heartedly recommend. It is very
comprehensive, well thought out and mostly – it is effective. In
addition, the physical CDs feel really nice, and the course can be
used on any CD player – even away from your computer. For years upon
years it was the only viable course, and though the basis of the
course is the same as it was 27 years ago, the course constantly
evolved and improved, and is now better than ever before.
Perfect Pitch
SuperCourse contains 24 lessons, in 8 CDs. 12 lessons
(CDs 1-5) are defined as beginner lessons, while the remaining 12
lessons (CDs 6-8) are more advanced.
The course (defined as a SuperCourse by Burge) is
based on the principles of tonal-colors. In essence, Burge wants
your ear to recognize and discern tones in much the same way that
your eye recognizes colors. He encourages you to listen to the tones
in a pre-specified, gradual teaching
order, and come up with your own personal associations and
characteristics for each note
(such as: this note sounds choppy, that note sounds twangy).
These characteristics are what would enable you to recognize the
notes afterwards, very much like you recognize people by the unique
characteristics of their faces (our imagery – not his).
If this sounds to you a bit abstract, well… it is! And this is one
of several shortcomings this course has which delegate it to
second place behind the Pure Pitch method. These shortcomings are:
-
The course
tonal colors teaching method is very abstract, so many
users just can't immerse in it, and cannot benefit fully from
the course. This brings on very inconsistent
results: some users obtain perfect pitch relatively easily,
others hardly benefit from the course.
-
To make things worse, unlike our
imagery above of different faces, the characteristics attached
to each tone are very subjective and differ from one person to
another. Thus, Burge refrains from providing many
characteristics, and mostly settles into getting you to relax,
listen to the tone without outside disturbances, and come up
with your own images and characteristics. This can become
hard work.
-
Learning takes a long while, and
requires consistent work and dedication. Burge himself admits to
6-12 months of learning. Normally you'd need about 15-20 minutes
per day of completely undisturbed focus time, at least 3-4 times
per week. Rushing things up will bring no benefits – only leave
you dumbfounded with a frustrating (but mistaken) feeling
that the course is repetitive useless.
-
A lot of this
course is unrelated, and deals with issues such as self
promotion (Burge's personal history and abilities, how good
this course is, how good the Relative Pitch SuperCourse is and why you should
buy it), substance abuse (say NO to alcohol and drugs),
etc.
-
Course users
must be able to play an instrument alongside course, so
vocalists without an instrument are at handicap.
-
Take note of
the return policy,
as detailed
above.
-
If you need
help with your learning from Burge - prepare to pay. The course
does not include an email help line, and Burge's time is
pricy.
-
Last but not
least - the course is very pricy ($139 for perfect pitch alone;
$388 if you want to learn both perfect pitch and relative pitch;
Pure Pitch teaches you both skills for only $97). This is
understandable due to the number of physical CDs, but we do
wish there was a downloadable version of this course, to enable
a much lower price.
The course includes
two bonus CDs, which should not influence your buying
decisions much:
-
The Relative Pitch
Demonstration: As much as we like the course, we can't say the same
of this CD. mostly, this CD should be dubbed "perfect
sales pitch": it does NOT teach you Relative Pitch.
Instead, it serves to show the benefits of relative pitch, thus
encouraging you to buy Burge's extensive but expensive
Relative Pitch SuperCourse.
-
The Perfect
Pitch for Children CD provides only a few very general clues on
how to teach Perfect Pitch to your children. We did not find it
very useful.
Still, don't get
the wrong idea that this is a bad course. On the contrary - although
it only reached 2nd place, this is an excellent
course. Until very recently this was the only useful course
available, and it still holds a lot of merit. It is excellently
produced (unboxing all the CDs is a real joy!), very comprehensive
and very well structured. If you use it with dedication, open up
your ears and don't try to speed things up - chances are you will
obtain perfect pitch after a year or so. For this, you should be
willing to spend around 15-20 minutes per day (up to 40 minutes for
lessons progress) at least 4 times a week, and without interruptions
- and if you do so, you will probably find this course effective.
Relative
Pitch
SuperCourse
As teaching
Relative Pitch is much easier than teaching Perfect Pitch, the case
for Relative
Pitch SuperCourse
is much simpler. This course too is well structured, a joy to unbox
and use (41 CDs - Wow!), very well structured and extremely
comprehensive. The only things to note are:
-
The
return policy is somewhat problematic,
as detailed
above;
-
The course does
not teach Perfect Pitch, only Relative Pitch.
-
The price is
very steep ($299
alone, or $388 when bundled with Perfect Pitch);
-
It
takes a very long time to master this course
(1-2 years of work is normal). This is much longer than when
using Pure Pitch Method's relative pitch lessons.
If these points are behind you,
and you want to learn relative pitch alone - this course could prove
very effective for you. In fact, for teaching Relative Pitch alone
this course is probably better than Pure Pitch Method's
Relative Pitch training, but as you probably gathered this review
places more importance on Perfect Pitch.
