The DVDs form the backbone of this course. They are the best we've seen on any program. Period. The 12 DVDs take you by the hand and guide you step by step in your learning. 11 DVDs contain 22 learning sessions, then there's a bonus DVD. Each session contains several chapters, and presents a concept that is a fundamental aspect of the art of drumming. The first 12 sessions are designed to be worked on in a sequence, where each session builds on the previous one and gradually enhances your skills. The last 10 sessions represent different stylistic approaches to drumming, that will spur your creativity. Dann Sherrill does a commendable job here. His teaching is clear, concise and very thorough. Unlike some other courses, he first teaches the concepts and ideas, then demonstrates how to perform them - slowly at first, then building up speed - and stresses all important details and possible mistakes and pitfalls. He goes into detail on every aspect of drumming - from holding the sticks, through assembling the drums and continues to highly advanced drumming techniques. Each session provides practice chapters, where by following Sherrill's instructions you can practice what you just learned. All in all, the DVDs teach just about every thinkable subject related to playing the drums.
Video quality is top-notch, with excellent camera positioning to best capture Barrow's playing.
Beginner students will appreciate the steep learning curve this course provides: it enable you to progress very quickly, and actually start playing in a very short time. More advanced students will appreciate the breadth and depth of the course. It contains so many lessons, tips and tricks that the DVDs cover a full year's worth of lessons (and that's before you start going through them a second time).
The 5CDs with the 70 Jam-Along tracks are a real treat. These "active" tracks enable you to play the tracks with the drums track turned on or off. The tracks mixed with drums tracks off also provide a nifty metronome sound to help you time your playing. The jam tracks enable you to progress gradually from following and imitating Sherrill's playing, to playing by yourself, even ad-libbing with the other instruments backing your playing. Probably the nicest part comes after you master the skills, play the songs with the drums track on again and try to outplay Sherrill (while possible this is a hard feat - he certainly knows how to play)! To further help you play, the beats for all songs are listed in the workbook. As with the DVDs, the songs in the CDs are varied, gradually grow in difficulty from true beginner to highly advanced, and cover a very wide range of genres - Blues, Rock (Early rock, Basic rock, 60s rock and Modern rock), Soul, R&B, Jazz and Brazilian music.
The thick and fully illustrated book complements the DVDs beautifully. It follows all DVD sessions, provides theory, drum charts and beats and provides deeper understanding of the DVD lessons. It also provides beats for the Jam-Tracks in the CDs. Although this course naturally revolves around the DVDs, the course's book alone can be considered as an excellent drums playing course. We truly admire its thoroughness.
Although this course is based on physical DVDs, CDs and book, it also provides access to an online members resources area containing excellent supplemental material. This section enables you to learn to play new songs and music, read sheet music, and learn tips and tricks.
