Singing Coach Unlimited is a
Learn-to-Sing software animated with amusing cartoon characters. The
software is fun to use, and effective. However, we were annoyed at
its software bugs, found it lacking for advanced and professional
singers, and somewhat kept feeling it was more of a toy than a
serious teaching aid.
The product's main strength, its being
software, is also its greatest weakness. Like Singorama, this
product is software based, and thus it is very flexible and fun to
use. Unlike Singorama, however, Singing Coach Unlimited is 100%
software, and fails to combine the software's strengths with
instructional workbooks and audio files. The manual provided with
the software is nicely organized and looks great, but it focuses on
the technical aspects of how to install and operate the software and
does not teach you how to sing. For that, the software relies on its
built-in lessons, but our testers deemed them not comprehensive
enough, and felt that the software could well benefit from a
decently structured workbook, as almost all other products here
provide.
A bright point is that the animated
characters and the playful attitude of the software are fun, and
that similarly to Singorama kids love the product. Again - this
proved also a weakness: you can't turn the characters off, so when
in lesson mode you have to listen to their l-o-n-g dialog every time
you want to practice. This is tedious, and makes you want to "skip
class" and stop practicing, which is a shame.
The software is also full of bugs and
glitches. Some could not install it without expert help. Some found
it difficult to use. In two cases, it slowed the computers to an
extent that it could hardly follow the singing. In two other cases,
it failed to classify the singing voice correctly. In many cases, it
couldn't deal well with humming. Ouch!
Advanced and professional singers will
find it of little practical use. The lessons are mainly for
beginners, and not good enough for pros. A major glitch lies in the software's grading system: one can sing beautifully,
demonstrating great vibrato and tones - but the software ignores it
all and grades you only by your ability to hold a note. Truly
annoying.
The software drew mixed reviews. We
like its comical spirit, but hate its
disadvantages. Interestingly, user reviews in Amazon were similarly
mixed - ranging from 1 to 5 stars.
Nevertheless, although Singing Coach
Unlimited is not as comprehensive as the other software reviewed
here, and is more expensive to purchase - it is still a good
product, well worth our "top 5" recommendation.
