The site provides a
money back guarantee phrased as follows:
"Better than risk-free 60 day money back
guarantee: If after sincerely giving the guitar course. a try, you
do not find this helpful in learning how to play the guitar or
improving your guitar skills - I will give you a full refund of the
purchase price - and you can take 60 days to decide". At
first sight, this guarantee seems superb. However, the phrasing "If
. you do not find it helpful etc." might prove to be a real obstacle
while actually trying to get your money back. It means that you
cannot just change your mind and return the product. Moreover - if
you do try it out but feel that "The product is really bad. The only
good thing I learnt was how to position my hands on the guitar" they
might not give you the refund. After all - you did find it
helpful in something.
As this guarantee
includes an "If" clause, without "No questions asked" following it -
it is NOT risk free. It may well be that they will in fact
refund your money - but there is no real guarantee they will do so.
Because of the
guarantee's shakiness, we give it One
thumb down!
This
program
is a no-nonsense course for beginners. Based on an e-book, sound
files and finger training techniques (so called "muscle memory
techniques") it provides good, reliable training, which enables you
to learn basic guitar skills fairly easy and quickly. If you're
content with learning basic guitar skills and don't plan on
progressing to intermediate, advanced or pro levels - this might be
the program for you.
The underlying idea of the program is the use of
"Muscle Memory" techniques. "Muscle
memory"
relates to the idea that our muscles "remember" certain movements or
positions after many repetitions of a given movement are performed.
By tensing the muscles while performing these movements, the
movements are more quickly "remembered" by the muscles and can
therefore be recalled more quickly when needed.
To illustrate this point, try to remember a
song you know where a guitarist (Hendrix, maybe) performs a
complicated solo, at the same time he's singing in a way that sends
shivers down your spine. As the guitarist probably concentrates on
his singing, his fingers just remember what they've played before,
and move like they know they should.
The theory
sounds great, but what matters to you is how well it was utilized in
this program. Of this
we hold mixed opinions: On the one hand, the program proved very
effective in teaching beginner guitar; On the other hand, the
program did not show any advantage over other programs based on
different teaching methods. To sum things up - we say this program
is effective in teaching beginner guitar - but no better in that
than the competition.
Having said this, let us describe the program's
components:
-
The
Beginner's Guide to Unlocking the Guitar
e-book and the Beginner chord sound files form the basis
of the program. The e-book is well structured and together with
the files, it provides excellent guitar training for beginners
and limited benefits to intermediates. The sound files enable
listening to how guitar chords sound like, but most testers
disliked their "Press & Listen" format, as it
hindered
downloading the files to CD and practicing away
from the PC using a sound system.
-
The
Perfect Chord Chart for Beginners is an illustrated chord
chart, similar to those given in other good programs.
-
The 150
popular songs with 4 chords or less e-book provides a nice
assortment of songs for beginners to practice with. As most
songs may be found free on Google, we wouldn't pay for this book
on its own. However, as a free bonus it is a good addition to
this course.
-
The
Beginning Singing Techniques e-book delivers well the basics
of singing right. As discussed in our conclusions, we consider
it extremely important for guitarists to know how to sing well,
and thus this book is a very good addition to this guitar
course.
In the
Risk: Order
Security + Money Back Guarantee
section, we described the program's shaky money back guarantee. Call
us picky, but we do have another beef with this program. The program
website leads visitors to believe that they are the only program
using muscle memory techniques. For example, they always add the
TM symbol to the phrase (Muscle Memory TechniquesTM)
and warn you that the competition "simply rewrites, rehashes,
or reuses the same old methods that are too difficult for the
average person" while the methods in their course are "100% unique
(not found on any other site)". We find this a
bit misleading. In fact - most programs we tested employed
muscle memory techniques to some extent, and a few programs are
actually based on this theory. Even Googling the words
"muscle memory" and "guitar" would find about over 25000 sites
employing the term. The Beginner's Guide to Unlocking the Guitar is
a top-rated product, and we think it is a pity to stain it with
misleading sales practices.
